LOCATION OF POSITIONS TO BE FILLED:  DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION, LAKE COUNTY

SUMMARY: Under general supervision, is responsible for professional correctional teaching work of average difficulty; and performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: This is the entry-level class in the Correctional Teacher sub-series. An employee in this class functions in a variety of assignments such as developing and implementing individualized curricula for the Adult Basic Education program (ABE) or providing group classroom instruction in the General Education Development program (GED), or participating as a member of various institutional boards such as the disciplinary or reclassification board. This class differs from that of Correctional Teacher Supv in that an incumbent of the latter participates in classroom instruction and acts as the assistant director of education at a large correctional facility.

 Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Designs, develops, and implements academic curriculums in areas such as adult basic education, including a). individualized curricula for non-readers and low level functioning students; b). general education development (GED) including basic education courses in mathematics, English, science, and social studies; c). vocation trade programs, including air-condition and refrigeration repair; welding, including theory and on the job training; meat cutting, including meat processing and packaging meat; and d). Title 1 program, youthful offenders 16-21, including basic math, science, English, language, and social studies.

2. Administers educational diagnostic pre and post-tests.

3. Counsels students in areas such as academics, behavioral, and personal problems.

4. Participates in in-service training, staff meetings, and departmental workshops.

5. Serves as a member of various institutional boards such as inmates disciplinary, work-release, or inmate reclassification board.

6. Monitors education building, including maintaining classroom discipline, monitoring hallways, and frisking inmates for weapons, illegal drugs, and other contraband.

7. Writes monthly reports and student attendance sheets.

 Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree, and completion of requirements for teaching certification.

 Necessary Special Qualifications/Examination Method:

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a valid Interim or professional Tennessee Teacher's Certificate is required.
