Plans and implements activities and functions of the Early Literacy Program by focusing on the developmental aspects of children's growth and assisting parents in increasing their understanding of literacy and cognitive development. Plans and facilitates a set of workshops and activities designed to promote school readiness and teach parents the skill necessary to be their child's first teacher. Provides referrals to families for resources to support both parent and child literacy.

 Examples of Duties:
Works collaboratively with the Family Education Coordinator to create a family- friendly and culturally sensitive community site that offers family literacy and parenting education to enable adults to attain proficiency in preparing their child for school.

Implements a comprehensive set of early literacy workshops and activities based on the evidence based HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parent of Preschool Youngsters) curriculum for parents that will assist them in improving the skills needed to be their child's first teacher.
Develops and implements weekly early literacy activities designed to promote school readiness that includes: story times, interactive parent/child educational sessions and other age appropriate programming.

Works collaboratively with the Family Education Coordinator to market the family education and resources programs and service through regular outreach and recruitment.

Assists Family Education Coordinator in developing and tracking performance measures. Develops and administers surveys, tracks program statistics, prepares program reports and analysis of data.
Participates in team planning sessions with all project staff to ensure well-coordinated and effective delivery of project services to meet program objectives. Work cooperatively and effectively as a team member by communicating and contributing information on a continuous basis.

Coordinates adult education programming and resources which address parent literacy training (reading, math and language skills) leading to educational and personal achievement goals for adults.

 Typical Qualifications:
Work requires broad knowledge in a general profession or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree in education or a closely related field.
Over one year experience in/as education, early child development, social work, family studies, nursing, psychology or closely related field, or equivalent combination of post-secondary education.

Valid Arizona Operator's Driver's License. Ability to obtain a Healthy Steps certification.

Work requires the ability to read various reports, memos, and articles, requests for proposals, research studies from other departments, inter-agency, professional journals and vendors.

Work requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may include ability to perform mathematical operations with fractions.

Work requires the ability to write documents, including reports, service methodologies, grant proposals, letters and other related business documents.

Conduct research, analyze findings based on multiple data sources; prepare and present clear and precise recommendations and reports.
Requires forecasting program needs and deadlines, planning for phases of program development including: Estimating cost and resources, Preparing program plans and reports, evaluating program outcomes.
Job has no responsibility for the budget.

The incumbent in this position has contact within and outside the organization to include non-profit and government agencies. Internal contacts may involve similar work units or departments within the City, which may be involved in decision making or recommendations for purchases and projects. Working with the public and citizens will also be required. Working with various state and federal agencies may also be required of the employee. Meetings and discussions may be conducted with customers, and program partners. Employee must maintain regular attendance.
